FEMA hosts planning meeting in Louisiana to coordinate flooding recovery

The DRA is committed to providing support for community planning, capacity building, and economic recovery when natural disasters strike communities in the Delta region. Last week, DRA joined FEMA and the Louisiana Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness for a meeting with local, state, and federal officials to coordinate response and recovery efforts for Louisiana communities impacted by recent flooding. FEMA's National Disaster Recovery Framework (NDRF) provides a much-needed structure that will help DRA and its federal, state, and local partners effectively support Delta communities with emergency resources in the wake of disasters as well as enhance trainings for local officials through the ECRC.

Louisiana will be the first statewide effort to coordinate services and resources of state and federal agencies under FEMA's National Disaster Recovery Framework. As a member of NDRF, the DRA is part of the interagency taskforce working on six core needs of communities in recovery: community planning and capacity building, economic recovery, infrastructure, social and human services, housing, and natural and cultural resources.

FEMA's National Disaster Recovery Framework guide provides a flexible structure that enables recovery managers in disaster-impacted areas to operate in a unified manner. It also focuses on restoring, redeveloping, and revitalizing the health, social, economic, and environmental status of affected communities while building resilience for future catastrophes, prominently important to communities in the Delta region that are commonly affected by natural disasters.

Big River Crossing will connect Memphis and West Memphis for recreation and tourism

The Big River Crossing (formerly known as the Harahan Bridge), which spans the Mississippi River connecting vibrant downtown Memphis with east Arkansas, will soon have a bike and walk path further connecting the public to geotourism and recreation on both sides of the River. Set for completion in October 2016, the bridge will connect more than 100 miles of publicly accessible walking, biking, and hiking trails for urban and rural dwellers in the Delta region, further supporting the growth of geotourism for communities seeking economic opportunities through tourism centered around our region’s cultural, historical, and natural assets.

The project, which has worked with state and local officials on both sides of the River and the DRA, is led by Big River Strategic Initiative and the McVean Family of Memphis. The City of Memphis and Crittenden County, AR are interested in reopening the former roadways for bicycle and pedestrian traffic connecting the two communities. The pedestrian and bike path on the north side of the Big River Crossing will present spectacular views of Memphis and the Mississippi River.
