Innovative Readiness Training Medical Missions Deliver Successful Care to Thousands in Illinois and Alabama

DRA was joined by our partners at the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to deliver no-cost healthcare services to thousands of residents over the past few months in Harrisburg, IL, and Monroeville and Thomasville, AL. The missions delivered medical, dental and optical care valued at $925,000.

We also enjoyed support from more than two dozen community organizations in delivering service to nearly 7,800 residents in the three areas.

At the “Southern Care” mission in Illinois, nearly 1,100 area residents from 11 counties were treated at Harrisburg Middle School from June 18-27. The total mission value was just more than $269,000.

The “Alabama Wellness” mission treated more than 6,700 patients at Monroe County High School and Thomasville High School from May 28-June 5. The total mission value was $656,000.

IRT missions deliver valuable healthcare services to Delta residents while providing field training for men and women in uniform who volunteer their time to help local communities.

DRA, Federal Partners Deliver Local Foods, Local Places Workshop in Duck Hill, MS.

DRA joined federal partners from the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Duck Hill, MS, to help local leaders identify and establish opportunities to develop local food systems that improve community spaces and lead to healthier residents.

The City of Duck Hill will receive $15,000 from DRA toward implementation of its plan to use environmentally-friendly infrastructure to address longstanding storm water and flooding problems as a necessary first step to enable revitalization efforts, including a 2.5-acre community garden, downtown farmers market, and redevelopment of a former school building into a community educational space.

EPA and USDA, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are providing technical assistance to the community to help develop its plan. The assistance is awarded as part of Local Foods, Local Places, a federal initiative that partners with communities to help them develop local food systems and enterprises.

Duck Hill was one of 16 communities in the United States selected to receive federal support this year. In the Delta region, McCrory and Helena, Arkansas, were also designated as 2018 Local Foods, Local Places partner communities.
