DRA Hosts 450 People at Two Technical Assistance Workshops

In April 2019, DRA launched a new initiative to support industry-driven workforce training and education across the eight-state Mississippi River Delta region. The Delta Workforce Program is designed to build community capacity by providing technical assistance and grant funding to support new and existing workforce development initiatives. To support this initiative, DRA is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Employment and Training Administration (ETA) and Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to invest $29.2 million in Delta and Appalachia communities through the Workforce Opportunity for Rural Communities (WORC) Grant. In July 2019, DRA will also make available an additional $1.5 million in grants to support smaller communities and organizations with similar workforce development priorities.

Last week, DRA hosted nearly 450 people from eight states at two technical assistance workshops in Memphis, TN and Baton Rouge, LA. Each workshop covered important topics such as the role of workforce development in rural economies, apprenticeship and other work-based learning models, and best practices from employers and training providers. Each session was designed to inform participants about DRA’s strategic priorities, but more importantly, to help participants develop competitive applications for the WORC Grant.

DRA Accepting Applications for the Delta Leadership Institute Executive Academy

Last month, DRA opened its application cycle for the 2019-2020 Delta Leadership Institute (DLI) Executive Academy. Since 2005, the DLI has trained a diverse group of community leaders dedicated to improving their communities.

DLI was created to support and educate leaders committed to helping create jobs, build their communities, and improve the lives of their neighbors. DLI provides professional leadership and policy training on issues that advance the economic and workforce competitiveness of Delta communities.

DLI fellows attend seven sessions over 10 months, traveling to communities in each of DRA’s eight states. Fellows explore existing programs and community models in the Delta, including discussions that enhance community engagement. Field experiences focus on improving the region, with an emphasis on economic development, infrastructure, workforce training and education, entrepreneurship and public health.

Delta residents interested in the 2019-2020 Executive Academy can apply through July 16 at
