DRA’s Board of Governors Meet for Annual Governor’s Quorum in Washington, DC; Governor John Bel Edwards Named 2020 DRA States Co-Chairman

DRA’s Board of Governors met February in Washington, DC for its annual Governor’s Quorum where Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards was elected the 2020 DRA States’ Co-Chairman.  Each year, the Governors elect a States’ Co-Chairman to work directly with the Federal Co-Chairman on economic development and growth in the Delta region.

“Governor Edwards has demonstrated a lifetime of leadership and service, and his track record of economic growth in Louisiana will be a tremendous asset to the entire DRA region,” said DRA Federal Co-Chairman Chris Caldwell.  “I look forward to working with Governor Edwards as we continue our mission of strengthening infrastructure, job growth, and economic development across DRA’s eight-state region.”

Governor Edwards was sworn in as the 56th Governor of Louisiana in January 2016 and was sworn into his second term on January 13, 2020.

“I’m honored to have been selected by my peers to serve as co-chairman and look forward to working closely with Federal Co-Chairman Caldwell,” said Gov. Edwards. “I am from a rural parish and understand the needs first-hand as well as the rich contributions these vital communities make to our state and nation. That’s why as I begin my second term in office, I have put a renewed focus on helping revitalize our struggling rural areas. The DRA continues to be a leader in expanding growth in the Delta and improving the lives of the people who call these regions home, and I am committed to building on that success.”

2020 SEDAP Application Cycle Now Open

The 2020 application cycle for the States’ Economic Development Assistance Program (SEDAP) is now open.  SEDAP, which provides direct investments into community-based and regional projects that address the DRA’s congressionally mandated four funding priorities, is the main investment tool used by the DRA.  All necessary information for application consideration can be found in the 2020 SEDAP Manual.

Organizations and communities can apply online at funding.dra.gov.  The deadline to submit applications is May 31, 2020, and funds are available to DRA’s footprint of 252 counties and parishes in Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee.

Information on state-specific funding allocations, funding program eligibility requirements, guidelines, and contact information for local development districts are available here.

DRA Hosts Technical Assistance Workshops in Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky

Last week, DRA held its first three Delta Workforce Program Technical Assistance Workshops in Cape Girardeau, MO, Carbondale, IL, and Paducah, KY.  Participants learned about the Department of Labor’s Workforce Opportunity for Rural Communities (WORC) Grant Program, how to create a competitive proposal, and lessons learned from previous grantees.

The Delta Workforce Program is a DRA initiative designed to support workforce training and education, build long-term community capacity, and increase economic competitiveness across the Lower Mississippi Delta region and Alabama Black Belt.

“The Delta Regional Authority is committed to investing in communities to foster comprehensive economic development by supporting job seekers, incumbent workers, and local industry,” said DRA Federal Co-Chairman Chris Caldwell.  “The Delta Workforce Program technical assistance workshops are the next step in connecting our federal partners and subject matter experts to our rural communities, ensuring their access to critical resources which help strengthen their talent pipeline, create jobs, and improve quality of life throughout the Delta region.”

Registration Still Open for Delta Workforce Program’s Technical Assistance Workshops in Little Rock, Memphis, Montgomery, Monroe, and Jackson

Communities and regions that have been negatively impacted by economic transition and recovered more slowly can apply for resources to help build their workforce pipelines and strengthen their economies.  Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to attend one of DRA’s technical assistance workshops. Guided by subject-matter experts and workforce practitioners, these workshops are designed to provide stakeholders with the systems, resources, and tools necessary to develop and implement comprehensive workforce development programs.

Space is limited. Interested participants must RSVP to attend.
